Diaspora Co.

The original intent of colonial conquest of the Indian subcontinent was a desire for domination of the spice trade.

In late 2016, 600+ years later, as a young woman born and raised in postcolonial Mumbai, working at the intersection of food and culture, I was slowly discovering that not much about that system had changed.

Ten wild months that included a one way ticket back to India, intense research, 40+ farm visits, endless un-answered phone calls, wild motorbike rides through farmland, and a lot of processing of doubts and fears later, Diaspora Co. was founded in late 2017 to create a radically new, and equitable vision of the spice trade, decolonizing a commodity back into a seasonal crop, and a broken system into an equal exchange.

Today, we work in close partnership with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research to identify and provide ongoing support to our partner farmers, all of whom are on the cutting edge of regenerative, and sustainable agriculture.

Founded in 2003 by husband-and-wife team Ted Vadakan and Angie Myung, Poketo has grown from a small startup into a creative hub and online destination. A lifestyle brand born out of the desire to infuse art and design into every day, Poketo creates collections of design-conscious goods to cultivate a creative lifestyle.

The name Poketo (pronounced “poh-keh-toe”) stems from the mispronunciation of “pocket” by Angie’s grandmother. It tied in perfectly with the first product ever created under Poketo: a series of artist wallets that fit right in your pocket—and Ted and Angie just loved the way it sounded.

In addition to its online store, Poketo has two LA-based retail locations in DTLA, and Little Tokyo, each of which hosts art exhibitions, workshops and other events that serve to foster the local creative community. Wife-and-husband duo Charlotte and Dave Cho launched Soko Glam in 2012 to help people discover Korean skincare, beauty trends, and cosmetics. Based in New York City, the Soko Glam team regularly travels to Seoul to scour the Korean skincare and makeup market, consult industry experts, and meet tastemakers to bring back the best selection of Korean beauty products for curation on Soko Glam. We're on a mission to reconnect people with nature, one houseplant at a time. We started Rooted because we firmly believe in the positive mental, emotional and physical health benefits associated with having greenery in your space.

When we first moved to New York, we felt disconnected from the lush environments we were so used to in California and Hawaii, having instead replaced it with this urban jungle we also know and love. Buying plants for our space helped fill that void.

We started Rooted to reconnect people to nature. Plants aren’t just beautiful things that make our spaces look and feel great, they’ve been scientifically proven to better your health and happiness as well.

The entire process was difficult to say the least. Finding plants was one thing, but getting them home another, and taking care of them? Nearly impossible at first.

That’s why we decided to create a one-stop shop that would make the plant-buying experience more fun, convenient and accessible in the most sustainable way possible.

We got our start by throwing what we liked to call “plant parties” out of our Brooklyn apartment, and personally delivering plants by hand. Two years, three stores, and thousands of happy customers later, we’re psyched to be providing you with the service that we do: affordable plants with fresh, educational content to guide you on your journey.
